Physical Therapy & Kinesio ankle Taping
HOW CAN TAPING HELP MY ANKLE?
If you are experiencing ankle pain, weakness, inflammation, instability or recovering from an injury, your physical therapist might suggest ankle taping as a tool to complement your rehabilitation program. Ankle taping has a long history within athletics and has often been used to stabilize the ankle in order to limit ankle sprains or reduce pain. Forty years ago, a more dynamic type of tape was invented for use in the rehabilitation setting and has since been used to address many conditions. This tape, Kinesio® Tape, when applied to the ankle, can provide many benefits beyond providing external stabilization.
WHAT IS KINESIO® TAPE?
If you have ever seen athletes wearing black, tan or brightly-colored tape on their shoulders, knees or ankles, you may be familiar with Kinesio® Tape. Kinesio® Tape is an elastic, therapeutic taping modality used in many different populations from young children to professional athletes. Kinesio® Tape can be applied in many different ways using the Kinesio® Taping Method and is intended to reduce inflammation, re-educate the neuromuscular system, promote healing and lymphatic drainage and promote good circulation to the area beneath the tape.
WHAT IS Kinesio Taping?
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM KINESIO® TAPING TECHNIQUE ON THE ANKLE?
Though Kinesio® Tape can be used throughout the body, this type of taping has many different applications when it comes to ankle rehabilitation. It is typically used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program to reduce pain and inflammation, relax or stimulate the ankle muscles and promote lymphatic flow. Given the goals of this taping technique, Kinesio® Taping can benefit clients recovering from many different types of injuries such as an ankle sprain or strain, ankle surgery as well as active individuals participating in work and sport-related tasks.
WHAT IS THE KINESIO® TAPING METHOD?
The Kinesio® Taping Method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979. It was developed as a therapeutic method of taping to provide not only external support but help rehabilitate injuries and address physiologic dysfunction. Therapists using Kinesio® Tape are first evaluating the client’s specific needs and impairments in order to determine the location of taping, the shape of the taping, the direction and amount of stretch. The assessment also determines what other interventions will be utilized in addition to the Kinesio® Taping. Kinesio® Taping is typically just one part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program, however, some patients may continue to use Kinesio® Tape in certain scenarios following discharge from physical therapy.
APPLICATIONS OF KINESIO® TAPE FOR THE ANKLE
Because of the unique design of Kinesio® Tape, it has many roles to play in the treatment of the ankle. When Kinesio® Tape is placed on the skin, it lifts the skin microscopically forming what are called convulsions, or small spaces beneath the layers of skin which allow for increased lymphatic drainage and a reduction in inflammation. Additionally, depending on the shape, stretch and direction of the tape, it can help re-educate muscles, reduce discomfort, prevent injury and promote good circulation. Because of its many functions, Kinesio® Tape can be applied to the ankle to achieve the following goals:
- Facilitate or inhibit muscles to address, imbalance, weakness or lack of motor control following an ankle sprain, ankle muscle strain, nerve injury or surgery
- Assist with recovery from foot drop or promote muscle contraction of the ankle dorsiflexors
- Promote neuromuscular re-education of ankle muscles to improve stability and control to prevent future injuries
- Promote movement of swelling and inflammation out of the ankle tissues after an acute injury
- Reduce pain in the ankle
- Promote improved circulation to help with injury recovery
- Promote circulation, muscular contraction, proprioception and normal tone in the case of a neurologic condition like a stroke, brain injury or cerebral palsy
How Long Will Physical Therapy and Kinesio Taping Last?
WHY CHOOSE KINESIO® TAPE FOR THE ANKLE OVER OTHER BRANDS OF TAPE?
While there are several brands of therapeutic tape, Kinesio® Tape has many components that make it special and effective for therapeutic taping. Some of these components are as follows:
-
Medical grade acrylic adhesive and 100% cotton fibers or cotton/polyester mix
Latex free and hypoallergenic
Water resistant with multiple day wear capabilities
For those with more sensitive skin, a lighter and more breathable line of tape exists for single day use
Tension on the tape is meant to stimulate or relax muscles
Elasticity mimics that of skin so it does not limit range of motion
HOW DO I KNOW KINESIO® TAPE IS RIGHT FOR MY ANKLE?
Since Kinesio® Tape is just one part of a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan, you should discuss your interest in this technique when you meet with your therapist for the initial evaluation. At that time they can advise you on whether they feel you are a good candidate for this taping technique and how it will fit into the larger treatment plan.
