HOW ARE LASERS USED IN PHYSICAL THERAPY?
Physical therapists utilize a variety of tools and treatment techniques to help address pain, inflammation, range of motion deficits and movement difficulties. In addition to patient education and carefully prescribed exercises, modalities such as heat, ice, electrical stimulation and laser therapy may also be indicated to help accelerate the healing process. Laser therapy, while used in medicine and science for decades, is not being used by some physical therapy clinics to facilitate quicker healing of injured or inflamed tissues.
Lasers are used as a modality and adjunct to other physical therapy interventions. This tool is used locally on an injured area to help promote healing, reduce pain and decrease localized inflammation. There are two types of lasers used in physical therapy: low level lasers and high power lasers. During treatment, the laser is applied carefully to the targeted area for about five to ten minutes. Laser therapy is used in conjunction with other physical therapy interventions to address the underlying cause of injury and help promote long-term healing.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM LASER THERAPY?
While not everyone is a candidate for laser therapy, laser therapy has been shown to be beneficial for a number of musculoskeletal conditions when incorporated as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. See below for a list of conditions that may benefit from the use of laser therapy.
HOW LONG WILL I NEED THIS MODALITY?
Multiple sessions of laser therapy are typically recommended to achieve the intended results but the number of sessions will be determined by your physical therapist based on the condition and other factors. It is important to remember that laser therapy is only one tool in the therapist’s toolbox. It is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Your physical therapist will speak with you about how long and how often they plan to use this modality and how long they feel you will need physical therapy as this differs greatly depending on the reason you are receiving care. One of the goals of the laser therapy, however, is to facilitate recovery and shorten the amount of time needed for rehabilitation.
A DEEPER LOOK INTO LASER TREATMENT IN PHYSICAL THERAPY…
The word ”laser” often conjures up images of sci-fi movies and rock concerts but lasers have had applications in medicine and science for decades. The word laser is actually an acronym. It stands for “light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation.” The production of light of certain wavelengths by the laser can have profound effects on the materials onto which the laser light is directed. If you have ever seen a laser cutter or laser engraver then you are aware of the power of certain types of lasers. As you can imagine, however, the lasers used in physical therapy are much more gentle.
In physical therapy, we utilize two types of lasers. Class III lasers, also known as low level lasers, have an output of less than 0.5 watts. These lasers are often referred to as “cold lasers” because they do not produce warmth or heat on the skin. When applied over an injured area, low level lasers are intended to reduce inflammation within hours to days of treatment. It can also provide relief of pain and stimulate tissue regeneration by stimulating the cells needed to build healthy tissues.
The second type of laser used in physical therapy is the high power laser or Class IV laser which has an output of greater than 0.5 watts. Unlike the low level laser, these lasers create heat. When placed against the skin, the laser light penetrates the skin and gets absorbed by the mitochondria (energy producers of the cells) in the immediate area which then promotes accelerated cell function to help normalize the cells it is targeting.
During a session of laser therapy your therapist will direct the laser over the targeted area usually for a duration of five to ten minutes. Usually multiple sessions are required to achieve the desired effects. Chronic conditions may require more sessions than acute conditions.
How Long Will Laser Physical Therapy Treatments Last?
If you decide to work with a physical therapist to help correct your issues, your entire treatment plan could consist of around 8-20+ different physical therapy sessions that will each last 60-90 minutes. Once you complete your customized physical therapy treatment plan, you will be able to continue to do the prescribed stretches and exercises utilized during your PT sessions yet in the comfort of your own home.
WHAT CONDITIONS MIGHT BENEFIT FROM LASER THERAPY?
Your therapist may opt to apply laser therapy over an area that could benefit from accelerated healing and reduction in inflammation. While this is not a complete list, here are some of the conditions that may be indications for laser therapy:
Low Level Laser Therapy
- Shoulder impingement
- Temporomandibular Dysfunction (jaw issues)
- Tennis elbow
- Neuropathic pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Back pain
- Knee pain
- Low back disc degeneration or herniation
High Power Laser Therapy
- Osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, ankle
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Ligament sprains
- Trigger finger
- Tenosynovitis
- Shoulder impingement
- Low back disc degeneration or herniation
- Tendonitis
- Bursitis
HOW DO I KNOW LASER THERAPY IS RIGHT FOR ME?
As mentioned above, laser therapy may be helpful in accelerating tissue healing and decreasing pain and inflammation in a number of conditions but is not always necessary or indicated. Laser therapy is just one part of a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan and you should discuss your interest in laser therapy when you meet with your therapist for the initial evaluation. At that time they can advise you on whether they feel you are a good candidate for this treatment technique and how it will fit into the larger treatment plan.
