Schroth Scoliosis Physical Therapy
How can the Schroth Method help me?
If you have scoliosis the Schroth Method can reduce pain and stop the progression of the curve of your spine. The exercises that my team and I teach you in this method can improve your mobility.
How does this method work?
This method works by incorporating movements that target the rotation of your spine. It also teaches you breathing techniques and posture awareness that can also provide a sense of relief.
How long until I notice any relief from my scoliosis?
It all depends on the severity of your current scoliosis. While it is a good pain management method and has shown improvement in many scoliosis patients, others may still need to seek alternative treatment.
What is the Schroth Method?
The Schroth Method utilizes specific exercises for scoliosis that will target returning your spine to a more natural position. If you have scoliosis, your spine will often rotate and curve into a C or an S shape. By using the Schroth method our physical therapists will focus on the following: restoring alignment, breathing exercises, and teaching you to be aware of your posture. While there is no set cure for scoliosis, this method has been proven to greatly reduce spine curvature in some cases.
Why will our physical therapists focus on restoring alignment, breathing, and posture?
Restoring Alignment & Muscle Symmetry: With the ever-changing curve of your spine you may find that your muscles have shifted. Exercises used with the Schroth method can help you to restore muscle symmetry, as well as the alignment of your spine.
Breathing Exercises: With the Schroth method focusing on breathing is very important. By utilizing rotational angular breathing, you can focus on rotating the spine to assist with reshaping your ribcage and any affected muscle tissue.
Posture Awareness: When someone has scoliosis, there are certain postures that may make their condition worse. Therefore, it is important to be aware of your posture if you have it. Once you are aware of how different postures may affect you, it will be easier to begin trying to correct your spinal curve.
How can Schroth exercises help my scoliosis?
- They can help to stabilize the curve of your spine
- Promote better pelvic alignment
- Allows for mobilization of any stiff muscles
- Improvement of posture
- Enhances neuromuscular control
- Assists in relieving pain
- Greater muscle strength
- Improved cardiac function
- And even help you breathe easier
How long will physical therapy treatment using the Schroth method last?
If you decide to work with a physical therapist to help correct your scoliosis, your treatment can last from around 8-20 different sessions that will each last 60-90 minutes. Once you complete your customized treatment plan, you will be able to continue to do the exercises utilized with the Schroth method in your own home.
Can you benefit from the Schroth Method?
This method of treatment for Scoliosis can be beneficial for children as well as adults. Anyone who is suffering from the pain and irritation that is often associated with scoliosis may benefit from Schroth exercises.
Other treatment for Scoliosis
The Schroth method is an excellent nonsurgical treatment for Scoliosis. However, depending on the severity of your case, bracing or surgery may be recommended. With bracing, you will wear a brace to stop your spine from curving any further. If you have a very severe case of scoliosis then your doctor may recommend a surgery called spinal fusion.
Should I consider the Schroth method for managing my Scoliosis?
Chronic Pain: If your child has chronic pain they may benefit from physical therapy exercises and manual therapy.
With the Schroth method the main goal is to prevent your spine from continuing to curve even more. This noninvasive method has been proven to prevent curving, as well as improve alignment of the spine. If you or someone you care about are suffering from scoliosis pain, the Schroth method may be a good choice.
