Physical Therapy for Football Players
HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY BENEFIT FOOTBALL PLAYERS?
Whether new to the sport of football or a many-year veteran, most players are looking for both a competitive edge and a way to stay healthy across many seasons. As any successful player knows, success in football does not come in isolation but as a result of the support of many different people. When it comes to building this support network, a skilled physical therapist should make the roster. Not only are physical therapists experts in rehabilitation and recovery from injuries like those that can affect football players, they are masters of injury prevention and movement analysis, three qualities necessary for optimizing performance in a competitive sport like football.
WHAT DOES PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS LOOK LIKE?
Physical therapy for football players will look different depending on the reason the athlete is seeking therapy. Physical therapists offer movement screen analyses, injury prevention programming, injury rehabilitation and more. No matter the reason you are here, my team of therapists and I will always start by getting to know your concerns and goals and perform a thorough physical exam to assess an injured area and/or to assess the mechanics and movement skills needed to excel at football. After discussing your goals, we will create an individualized therapy program to facilitate full recovery from any existing injuries, to address risk factors for future injuries as well as any existing impairments that may impact sport performance.
HOW LONG WILL I NEED PHYSICAL THERAPY?
The length of a physical therapy plan of care may last only a few visits if the goal is to establish an exercise program for an uninjured player looking to reduce future injury risk and maximize performance. It could also last much longer if a player needs to undergo rehabilitation for a specific injury or following a surgery. Your therapist will discuss this with you at your first visit so that you know what to expect.
WHAT PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO FOOTBALL PLAYERS?
As mentioned above, there are many ways in which a physical therapist can support a football player. Here are some of the services that we offer to players to support them in their careers as a player:
Injury Rehabilitation
Physical therapists are trained extensively in injury rehabilitation. As a high impact sport, football players are at risk for experiencing injuries that can impact their ability to continue playing. These injuries can occur during practice, during games and even in the training room. Some examples of injuries that physical therapists treat in football players are as follows:
- Ligament sprains
- Muscle strains
- Muscle contusions
- Ligament tears (ACL, MCL, etc)
- Fractures
- Concussions
While it may be tempting to self-treat and to jump back into practices and competitive play as soon as possible, failure to fully rehabilitate an injury can predispose you to recurrent injuries. There are several benefits related to injury and post-surgical rehabilitation that working with a physical therapist can provide you including assurance that you are fully recovered from the injury and that the injured tissues are prepared to take on the unique forces and stresses associated with football.
If you have taken off some time or decreased your training in response to signs of pain or injury, your symptoms may have improved due to a lower training load but it does not guarantee that symptoms won’t recur once you increase your training load again. With proper rehabilitation we can help minimize this risk. This leads us to another way that working with a physical therapist can benefit a football player…
How Long Football Physical Therapy Treatments Last?
If you decide to work with a physical therapist to help with football related issues, your entire treatment plan could consist of around 8-20+ different physical therapy for back pain sessions that will each last 60-90 minutes. Once you complete your customized physical therapy treatment plan, you will be able to continue to do the prescribed stretches and exercises utilized during your PT sessions yet in the comfort of your own home.
Looking for the cause of an injury
While full recovery and return to play is the ultimate goal when it comes to injury rehabilitation, a physical therapist has much more to offer. We are interested in identifying the factors that may have predisposed you to the injury in the first place so that we can make a plan to address them. This helps decrease your risk for future injury. Here are some factors that we look for when assessing a player:
- Muscle strength, power and endurance
- Flexibility and mobility in muscles and joints
- Sleep, nutrition and recovery time
- Training schedule
- History of prior injury
- The physical demands of a player’s position on the team
While some injuries are unavoidable, there may be times when internal and external factors play a role. Identifying these factors allows us to address them with a good physical therapy program or give advice on beneficial modifications to your training.
Movement and Performance Analyses
Over many years of studying the game of football, experts have determined the skills and components necessary for optimal performance. Being able to perform at your best requires that your body has enough strength, power, endurance, flexibility, etc. to not only perform your role on the field but also to manage the high training volumes on the field and in the training room. As movement experts, your physical therapist can assess your form with common training exercises like deadlifts, squats, plyometrics or running and give you insight on how to optimize the movements to enhance effectiveness and also decrease injury risk. Similarly, they can analyze common movement patterns utilized during play and determine if there are areas of weakness or impairments that should be addressed through a comprehensive training program.
So, if you are a football player who has never had an opportunity to work with a physical therapist we hope you can now see the many benefits of doing so. We want to work alongside your coaches, athletic trainers and family members to support your goals and dreams of excelling in football.
