Physical Therapy for Extreme Athletes

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY BENEFIT EXTREME ATHLETES?

Extreme athletes are those operating at the highest levels of sport and fitness, often those that require high speed and high risk. From ice climbers to motocross racers, extreme athletics are gaining in popularity and these high performers need professionals in their corner to keep their bodies in top shape. One thing most extreme athletes have in common is that they are pushing their bodies to the limit in training and often competition and with this type of activity injuries and irritations are bound to occur at some point.

If you are an extreme athlete you need a great physical therapist on your team. Being able to address mild symptoms like aches, pain and tightness when they first develop is key to preventing injuries that can sideline an athlete. This is one of the benefits of working with a PT who can evaluate your movement patterns, your training and the structures of your body itself to address impairments as they arise and help you incorporate injury-preventing training and lifestyle habits into your routine. Finally, in the case that injury does strike, your PT is there to help you recover and prepare your body to return to the demands of your sport.

WHAT DOES PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR EXTREME ATHLETES LOOK LIKE?

Physical therapy for extreme athletes is often twofold. One aspect is post-injury and post-surgical rehabilitation. The other aspect is injury prevention and addressing concerns about milder symptoms that may be precursors to future injury. My team of therapists and I will always start by getting to know your concerns and goals and performing a thorough physical exam. After this we will create an individualized therapy program to facilitate full recovery from any existing injuries, to address risk factors for future injuries and target any impairments that may impact sport performance.

HOW LONG WILL I NEED PHYSICAL THERAPY?

The length of a physical therapy plan of care may last only a few visits if the goal is to establish an exercise program for an uninjured athlete looking to reduce future injury risk and maximize performance. It could also last much longer if the athlete needs to undergo rehabilitation for a specific injury or following a surgery. Your therapist will discuss this with you at your first visit so that you know what to expect.

WHAT IS AN EXTREME ATHLETE?

Extreme sports are traditionally defined as sports or activities that involve a relatively high degree of risk and often a high degree of speed. Examples of these sports include:

  • BMX
  • Dirt bike riding and motocross
  • Mountain biking
  • Freestyle skiing
  • Skateboarding
  • Rock climbing or ice climbing
  • Skydiving
This is not a complete list and it may be fair to extend the definition of extreme athlete to even include others such as ultra distance athletes, mountaineers and even high operating military personnel. Two things all of these activities have in common though are that the risk of serious injury can be quite high and that they require a high degree of skill and training.

WHAT KINDS OF INJURIES DO PTs TREAT IN EXTREME ATHLETES?

Given the nature of the activities in which many extreme athletes are involved, the types of injuries incurred are highly variable. Injuries may occur due to accidents while performing their sport or as a result of training in the gym, for example. Along with post surgical rehab, here is a list of some of the injuries that PT’s treat in extreme athletes:

  • Muscle contusions
  • Tendinopathy or tendonitis
  • Fractures
  • Muscle, tendon or ligament tears
  • Sprains and strains
  • Joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Concussions and head injuries

WHY CHOOSE PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Physical therapists are experts in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions and injuries like the ones listed above. Most extreme athletes will do anything they can to avoid having to take time off from their sport. Whether it is their job to earn money through their sport or simply an important part of a well-rounded and happy life, maintaining a healthy and injury-free body is a priority.

End Injury Progression

Physical therapy for extreme athletes has proven to slow and even stop pain issues and injury progression in many cases.

Relieve Pain

The movements used in this technique can target everything from your ankles, legs, lower back, upper back, hips, arms, shoulders, and neck helping you to manage pain during the course of your physical therapy treatments.

Improve Range of Motion

Posture awareness is an important area to focus on due to the fact that certain positions may cause you further back pain.

Restore Mobility

You can gain mobility and flexibility by taking part in the stretches and exercises as prescribed by your physical therapist.

How Long Will Extreme Athlete Physical Therapy Treatments Last?

Injury Rehabilitation

PTs treat acute and chronic injuries as well as offer post-surgical and pre-surgical rehabilitation. In fact, addressing an injury early on is a great way to facilitate faster and more complete healing rather than employing the “wait and see” approach. This approach can lead to more serious injuries and longer recovery time which may result in stopping your training and activities for a while.

PTs aim to get at the root cause of an injury. Sometimes, in the event of a BMX crash, for example, the cause of the injury is pretty obvious and may have been unavoidable. In other cases such as low back pain caused by an improper seat height on a mountain bike or tendinopathy of the wrist in a rock climber, identifying the contributing factors is an important part of facilitating long-term recovery. So while your PT will certainly address symptoms of pain, stiffness and inflammation, they will also address the impairments that may have led to the injury. Some examples of impairments that a PT will address are as follows:

  • Muscle strength, power and endurance deficits
  • Flexibility and mobility issues
  • Motor control impairments
  • Faulty movement patterns and technique
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness limitations

In addition to this, your PT will take into consideration external factors that may be contributing to your injury. These include things such as:

  • Sleep
  • Nutrition
  • Recovery time
  • Training schedule
  • History of prior injury
  • Training environment
  • The mental and physical demands of the sport

With this information in hand you will receive a personalized and comprehensive injury rehabilitation protocol.

Injury Prevention

Perhaps the only thing better than fully recovering from an injury is preventing it in the first place. As mentioned earlier, some injuries are out of your hands, but having a sport-specific and individualized prehabilitation program can help you prevent as many as possible. As physical therapists analyzing the demands of your extreme sport and combining them with the physical attributes of your body and training approach, we can advise you on exercises that you can incorporate into your routine to minimize injury risk where you can and hopefully help you perform even better at your sport!
