Kinesio Taping

WHAT IS KINESIO® TAPE?

If you have ever seen athletes wearing black, tan or brightly-colored tape on their shoulders, knees or ankles, you may be familiar with Kinesio Tape. Kinesio Tape is an elastic, therapeutic taping modality used in many different populations from young children to professional athletes. Kinesio Tape can be applied in many different ways using the Kinesio Taping Method and is intended to reduce inflammation, re-educate the neuromuscular system, promote healing and lymphatic drainage and promote good circulation to the area beneath the tape.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM KINESIO TAPING TECHNIQUE?

This type of taping has many different applications. As mentioned above, it is suitable for many different populations. Kinesio Tape was developed to mimic the elasticity of human skin and to be hypoallergenic to allow for maximal tolerability and multi-day wear periods. It is typically used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program to reduce pain and inflammation, relax or stimulate muscles and promote lymphatic flow. Given the goals of this taping technique, Kinesio Taping can benefit clients recovering from many different types of injuries or conditions as well as active individuals participating in work and sport-related tasks.

HOW LONG WILL I NEED THIS MODALITY?

Kinesio Tape is utilized in many different scenarios in physical therapy. In many cases it is used temporarily to help facilitate healing and reduce inflammation or pain. In other cases tape may be used longer term during work or athletic activities, for example. Kinesio Taping is usually one piece of a larger physical therapy plan of care that addresses the underlying impairments. Your physical therapist will speak with you about how long and how often they plan to use this modality and how long they feel you will need physical therapy as this differs greatly depending on the reason you are receiving physical therapy. One of the goals of the Kinesio Tape, however, is to facilitate recovery and shorten the amount of time needed for rehabilitation.

WHAT IS THE KINESIO TAPING® METHOD?

The Kinesio Taping Method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979. The Kinesio Tape website defines the method as

"[T]he definitive rehabilitative taping system of knowledge, is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion, as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting."

It was developed as a therapeutic method of taping to provide not only external support but help rehabilitate injuries and address physiologic dysfunction. Therapists using Kinesio Tape are first evaluating the client’s specific needs and impairments in order to determine the location of taping, the shape of the taping, the direction and amount of stretch. The assessment also determines what other interventions will be utilized in addition to the Kinesio Taping.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT KINESIO TAPE?

While there are several brands of therapeutic tape, Kinesio Tape has many components that make it special and effective for therapeutic taping. Some of these components are as follows:

  • Medical grade acrylic adhesive and 100% cotton fibers
  • Latex free and hypoallergenic
  • Water resistant with multiple day wear capabilities
  • Tension on the tape is meant to stimulate or relax muscles
  • Elasticity mimics that of skin so it does not limit range of motion
The tape is often applied in an “I”, “X” or “Y” pattern over the targeted muscle though other patterns may be used as well. When placed over the skin, the tape is meant to lift the skin microscopically in order to create more space underneath which helps reduce inflammation and promotes flow of lymphatic fluid and blood. It can help reduce pain, relax overused or tired muscles or stimulate muscle function.

The tension or stretch of the tape can also be modified and customized to achieve different results. The tape has three zones. The anchor is the first spot that the tape is applied on the skin. At the other end of the tape is the base. In between the anchor and the base is the therapeutic zone which can be modified by the clinician by applying more or less tension on the tape. The amount of tension on the tape and the direction in which it is stretched across the skin and muscles determines the effect of the tape.
